Friday Focus: Creating Structure Through Example
The importance of having a structure, a system in place, personnel, and procedures cannot be understated when running a business.
The best and most successful teams, projects, missions all have had a superior set of processes and structures in place in order to move them forward towards their chosen objectives.
Structure starts at the top, the business owner or CEO is the one who sets the example and draws up the structure, in planning, hiring and strategic moves in an attempt to attain the highest efficiency, profitability and longevity of the brand.
With that said, how one acts in their personal life translates directly to their performance when working on their business. In order for your company to create a sound, solid structure, the business owner has to initiate it, be the catalyst, break ground for the foundation on which the structure will stand. Accountability, communication, taking constructive feedback, delegation and discipline are a few key factors which come along with a strong structure.
When creating a structure for your business, it’s important to look within. Do you possesses these important structural traits? Are you personally disciplined, accountable, and honest; open to feedback, able to delegate tasks and be open to collaboration? How can a business owner expect those around them or collaborating with their company to exhibit those qualities essential to a solid structure without the knowledge, practice or experience in them himself?
It’s important to understand, your team looks up to you and as an owner and leader your actions and habits carry so much weight. What you say is listened to, followed and used as a pillar, an anchor and reference point whether negative or productive. Evermore important that when attempting to create a structure, personally possessing and exhibiting the intangibles you would desire to impart on your team, makes all the difference.
Structure is stability and stability is rooted in accountability, showing up, putting in the work and operating with fairness and integrity. The most consistent manner to build structure at your business is to have it yourself, lead with it and set the example.
Written rules, contingency plans and so forth hold no weight if the man or woman at the top doesn’t adhere to them themselves.
Look within, become that change and structure you would like to see in others. As a leader your example can create that solid mooring which will hold your business steady through the turbulent journey towards success.
